I remember my grandmother would say, whatever palatable for tongue is bad for stomach and whatever good for stomach is non palatable for tongue, example of bitter gourd and methi which are very bitter in taste but good for health. Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. Fast food can also be defined as any food that contributes little or no nutrient value to the diet, but instead provides excess calories and fat. Fast food can be a good way to save time, but not the proper way for nutrition. Some of these foods that are of little nutritional value and often high in fat, sugar and calories. Common foods include salted snack foods, gum, candy, sweet deserts, fried fast food and cold drinks. Fast food may include chips, hot pies, pasties, sandwiches, burgers, croissants, kebabs, pizzas etc. It has detrimental effect on health such as obesity, weight gain, tooth decay, it contains no fiber content so bowl movement becomes slow and one may suffer from constipation.
Bhagavad Gita as being a most practical manual for everyone gives the understanding of what kind of food to be eaten. Lord Krsna in 17 th chapter of Gita tells there are 3 kinds of food, food in mode of goodness, passion and in ignorance. The food in mode of goodness(juicy, fatty, wholesome) increases the duration of life, purify the life and gives strength, where as food in mode of passion(too salty, pungent, burning) and ignorance(putrid, decomposed and untouchable like meat) cause distress, misery and disease.
So one should always opt for food in mode of goodness such as vegetables, fruits and milk products which will increase duration of life and purify the body. Better than food in mode of goodness is food offered to the God and can be accepted as prasad because this food makes one free from sins. Prabhpuad gives a nice example to explain this, he says, "when there is an epidemic disease, an antiseptic vaccine protects one from attack of such epidemic, similarly food offered to Lord Vishnu and then taken by us makes us sufficiently resistant to material affection. By such actions past sinful actions in body vanquished and body becomes immunized to all contamination."
So let's eat only prasad and stay fit bodily and spiritually too!!
